How to tell if someone likes you over text: 10 signs in the chat
You reread every message, check when they were last online and scroll back looking for clues. Totally normal. The good news: a chat leaves a trail. Who starts, who asks, who suggests meeting up. Here are 10 signs you can actually see in a WhatsApp conversation, what they mean, and what they don't.
In this guide
First: what a chat can (and can’t) tell you
Over text there's no eye contact or tone of voice, so what's left are patterns: how much each of you writes, when, and how you respond to each other. A single message means nothing; what counts is what keeps happening over weeks.
Everyone also texts differently. Some people reply to everyone within two minutes; others take hours even with their best friend. So the useful question isn't "do they reply fast?" but "how do they treat me compared with how I treat them?" That's reciprocity: both of you putting in roughly the same.
10 signs someone likes you over text
None of these is proof on its own. If you see several at once, and they last, that's a good sign.
1. They text first (and not only when they need something)
Whoever opens the conversation is saying "I thought of you". If it's almost always you, take note. If it's split, or they start more often, that's one of the clearest signals there is.
2. They reply quickly… for them
They don't need to answer within seconds. What matters is that when you're talking, the conversation flows instead of stalling for hours. Look at their typical reply time, not the one afternoon they went quiet: everyone has busy days, work or a dead battery.
3. They ask you questions (and listen to the answers)
Asking means wanting to know more. "How did the exam go?", "Did you end up going to the gig?" If you answer all their questions but they never ask any back, the curiosity only runs one way.
4. They remember what you told them
Asking about the job interview you mentioned three days ago says a lot: they listened, and it mattered enough to remember.
5. They make real plans
"We should hang out sometime" isn't the same as "Want to grab a drink on Saturday?". Plans with a day and a place, and especially saying yes when you suggest one, are among the most telling signs.
6. Good morning and good night texts
A "good morning" for no reason, a "night, sleep well". People keep these little rituals for someone they care about. Even better if you both do it.
7. They keep chatting past midnight
Conversations that stretch past midnight, when the easy thing would be to say "talk tomorrow", usually mean they're enjoying talking to you.
8. They flirt: compliments, nicknames, emojis with intent
A "you look great in that photo", a cute nickname, a 😏 or 😘 now and then. Careful: some people send hearts to everyone, so check whether they use them with you more than usual, and whether the tone is romantic or buddy-buddy.
9. You're not the only one who follows up
Sending two or three messages in a row with no reply (the double text) happens to everyone. But if it's always you chasing and they almost never do, the interest is lopsided.
10. You start texting alike
Without noticing, you pick up the same expressions, the same kind of sentences, even the same "hahaha". Psychologists call it Language Style Matching: in a 2011 study by Ireland, Pennebaker and colleagues, speed-daters whose language styles matched more were more likely to want to see each other again. It isn't proof of love, but it is a sign you're in sync.
Signs that mislead (and don't mean much)
Before you jump to conclusions, rule out these common traps:
- Being left on read. They may be at work, driving, or just not in the mood to type. One read receipt is not a verdict.
- Hearts out of habit. Some people ❤️ everything. Compare with how they talk to others if you can.
- One weird week. Exams, travel, a rough patch. Look at months, not days.
- Shy people. Some text little even when they're delighted. With them, questions and plans matter more than volume.
- Comparing with other chats. What matters is the balance between the two of you, not whether you text more or less than another couple.
Quick checklist: do they like you or are they just replying?
Go through the last month of your chat and answer honestly:
- Do they start the conversation at least half the time?
- Do they reply in about the same time you do?
- Do they ask about you, not just answer your questions?
- Have they suggested a concrete plan (or accepted yours)?
- Are there good mornings, good nights or chats that run late?
- Is there some flirting, even jokingly?
- Do you both follow up when the other goes quiet, not just you?
Five or more yeses means there's plenty of reciprocity. If it's mostly no, it doesn't mean they don't like you, but it does mean that right now you're putting in more than they are.
With data
How Mutuo measures it
Counting all this by hand across months of chat is impossible. Mutuo reads your WhatsApp chat export and, in 💘 Crush mode, turns each sign into an indicator:
- Initiative → who starts the conversations (sign 1).
- Reply speed → each person’s typical (median) and average reply time (sign 2).
- Curiosity → who asks the other more questions (signs 3 and 4).
- Plans → who suggests meeting up and who says yes (sign 5).
- Good morning / night → days with these rituals, per person (sign 6).
- Late-night chats → messages between 00:00 and 05:00 (sign 7).
- Flirting and Romance or friendship? → compliments, nicknames and emojis per 100 messages, and whether the tone is romantic or buddy-like (sign 8).
- Persistence → double texts and unanswered turns (sign 9).
- Sync → Language Style Matching based on function words (sign 10).
From all that it works out a 0–100 score for how balanced the chat is: 100 means you both put in the same. It also tells you how confident the result is: with fewer than 200 messages or under two weeks of chat, it warns you it's only a rough guide. It understands English, Spanish and Catalan.
Privacy
Your chat never leaves your phone
A chat is about as private as it gets, so Mutuo analyses it inside your browser, on your own phone. The file isn't uploaded to any server, there's no account, and no AI reads your messages: it's rules and counts. The other person never finds out.
What if the signs aren't there?
A lopsided chat isn't always a no. Sometimes they're like that with everyone, or going through a rough time. But if you've been carrying the conversation alone for months, it's worth asking whether it's worth it for you.
And the most reliable test is still the simplest: suggest a clear plan and see what happens. Data helps you stop overthinking; it doesn't replace a real conversation. If you're wondering whether they see you as just a friend, read friend zone signs over text.
FAQ
Can you tell for sure if someone likes you over text?
Not for sure. A chat shows patterns of interest (who starts, who asks, who makes plans), but it can't read minds. Treat it as a clue, not a verdict.
Does replying fast mean they like you?
Not necessarily. Some people reply fast to everyone. It’s more useful to compare their reply time with yours and see whether the chat flows while you’re talking.
Is there a test to see if someone likes me?
Quiz-style tests rely on what you remember. Mutuo does something different: it analyses your real WhatsApp chat and gives you a 0–100 reciprocity score. Free, no sign-up.
Will the other person know if I analyse our chat?
No. Exporting a chat doesn't notify anyone, and Mutuo analyses it on your phone without uploading it anywhere.
How many messages do I need for a useful result?
The more the better. With fewer than 200 messages or under two weeks of conversation, Mutuo warns you that confidence is low.
Do they like you, or are they just replying?
Upload your WhatsApp chat and see it in numbers. Free, no account, and it never leaves your phone.
