Signs someone likes you on Instagram: reading the DMs

On Instagram, interest is scattered across likes, story replies, shared reels and direct messages. Lots of noise, few certainties. This guide separates the signs that mean something from the ones that are just how the app works.

Instagram is noisy

Liking a photo takes a second and is often done without thinking. Watching a story isn’t even a decision: it just plays as you swipe. That’s why Instagram’s “passive” signals say little on their own.

It gets interesting when someone turns that activity into conversation: when they reply, ask questions and seek you out in private. That takes effort you can actually read.

7 signs that do mean something

1. They reply to your stories with more than an emoji

A 🔥 is nice. A reply that asks something or comments on a detail (“is that Lisbon? I want to go!”) is an open door to talk.

2. The conversation keeps going after the story

If the chat continues in DMs after a story reply, and doesn’t die after two messages, they’re interested in talking to you, not just in your content.

3. They send you reels or memes picked for you

Sharing a reel with “this is so you” or “made me think of you” means they think of you outside the conversation. Even better if you talk about them afterwards.

4. They DM you first

As in any chat, who breaks the silence matters a lot. More on that in who texts first and what it means.

5. They ask about your life, not just your posts

Commenting on your photos is easy. Asking how your exam went or how things are with your family is taking an interest in you.

6. They try to move things off the DMs

Asking for your number, suggesting a coffee or meeting up is the clearest sign of all: they want this to leave the app.

7. There’s continuity

One intense late-night chat followed by weeks of silence says less than calmer but steady conversations.

Signs that mislead

These cause a lot of overthinking and actually say fairly little:

  • They watch all your stories (and early). The order of your viewers depends on the algorithm and how they use the app; it isn’t a ranking of who looks at you most.
  • Likes on old photos. Could be interest, could be a slipped thumb. Without conversation behind it, don’t overrate it.
  • They follow, then unfollow. There are a thousand reasons, from cleaning up their account to a mistake.
  • Heart reactions on everything. Some people react that way to every DM. Compare with how they talk in general.

The key: balance in the DMs

Just like on WhatsApp, what best shows mutual interest is comparing what each of you does: who starts, who replies and how fast, who asks, who suggests plans. If you’re always the one replying to their stories and keeping the chat alive, there’s an imbalance, however many likes there are.

If you’re wondering whether they see you as more than a friend, also have a look at friend zone signs over text.

How Mutuo measures it

Mutuo also reads Instagram direct messages. Instagram doesn’t let you export a single chat, so you download your messages from Accounts Center (we explain how in how to download your Instagram messages), load the .zip and pick the conversation. In 💘 Crush mode you’ll see:

  • Initiative → who starts each conversation.
  • Reply speed → each person’s typical reply time.
  • Curiosity → who asks the other more.
  • Plans → who suggests meeting up and who says yes.
  • Flirting and Romance or friendship? → compliments, nicknames and emojis, and whether the tone is romantic or buddy-like.
  • Persistence → double texts and unanswered turns.

Keep in mind Mutuo only sees messages: likes, story views and anything outside the chat aren’t in the export.

To measure it in your DMs, open the Instagram DM analyzer.

Privacy

Your messages never leave your phone

The Instagram file is analyzed inside your browser. It’s not uploaded to any server, you don’t need an account and nobody else sees your conversations. The other person never finds out.

FAQ

If they watch all my stories, do they like me?

Not necessarily. Watching stories is almost automatic and the viewer order doesn’t show who looks at you most. Replies that turn into conversation mean much more.

What does it mean when someone sends you reels?

That they think of you outside the conversation, which is a good sign. If you then talk about them and the chat keeps going, the interest is clearer.

Will they know if I analyze our DMs?

No. Downloading your Instagram information notifies nobody, and Mutuo analyzes the file on your phone without uploading it.

Can I analyze an Instagram group chat?

No: Mutuo measures the balance between two people, so it only works with one-to-one conversations.

Are your DMs mutual?

Download your Instagram messages, pick the conversation and see who puts in more. Free, and it never leaves your phone.
