How to download your Instagram messages, step by step
Instagram has no “export chat” button like WhatsApp, but it does let you download a copy of your direct messages from Accounts Center. Here’s the full path, which options keep the file light, and what you’ll find inside.
In this guide
Before you start
You request the download from the Instagram app (iPhone or Android) or the website, and it works the same everywhere. Nobody is notified: it’s a copy of your own information. You just need access to your account; it may ask for your password to confirm.
Instagram doesn’t download a single conversation: it exports all your messages in one .zip file, with a folder per conversation. If you want to analyze one chat, you pick it afterwards.
Step by step in the app
- Go to your profile (your photo, bottom right) and tap ☰ in the top right.
- In Settings and activity, tap Accounts Center.
- Open Your information and permissions.
- Tap Export your information. Some accounts still call it Download your information.
- Tap Create export, pick your Instagram profile, then Export to device.
- Tap Customize information, untick Select all and leave only Messages ticked. Save.
- Check the date range (“All time” for the whole history), the format (JSON; HTML works too) and a low media quality.
- Tap Start export. Instagram will let you know when the file is ready.
- Go back to Export your information and tap Download. You’ll get a .zip.
Menu names change now and then, and some accounts see the older version (“Download or transfer information” → “Some of your information”). The idea is always the same: Accounts Center, your information, export messages only.
Which options to pick (and why)
Messages only
If you leave everything ticked, the download includes photos, comments, searches and much more, and the file can run to several gigabytes. For your conversations, Messages is enough.
JSON or HTML
HTML opens in a browser and is easy to read. JSON is meant for programs to read: it’s the best choice if you’ll analyze the chat with a tool. Mutuo accepts both.
Low media quality
The photos and videos you’ve sent each other take up a lot of space. With low quality the download is much faster, and the text of the messages is exactly the same.
How long it takes and what’s included
It depends on the size of your account: it can be ready in minutes or take hours. You’ll get a notification or an email when it’s ready, and the download link is only available for a few days, so don’t leave it too long.
- Included: the text of each message, who sent it and when, reactions, and references to shared photos, audio, reels and posts.
- Not included: messages that were unsent or deleted before the download.
- May not be included: conversations with end-to-end encryption turned on, which Meta handles separately.
If something goes wrong
The most common problems are easy to fix:
- I can’t find “Export your information”. Look for “Download your information”, or go to Accounts Center from the Instagram website.
- The download never finishes. Request it again with only Messages and low quality: it’s usually a size issue.
- A conversation is missing. Check the date range and whether that chat had end-to-end encryption turned on.
- Accents look garbled when I open the JSON. That’s how Instagram stores text; programs that read the file fix it automatically.
With data
Analyze your DMs with Mutuo
With the .zip on your phone, open Mutuo, pick a mode (💘 Crush, 🫂 Friendship or 💞 Couple) and Instagram as the app. Load the file as it is, no need to unzip: Mutuo finds every conversation inside and lets you pick which one to analyze.
You’ll see who starts conversations, who takes longer to reply, who asks, who suggests plans, and a 0–100 reciprocity score. For specific signs of interest, see signs someone likes you on Instagram. Got a WhatsApp chat instead? The steps are in how to analyze a WhatsApp chat.

Privacy
The file never leaves your phone
Your Instagram download contains all your conversations, so Mutuo opens it inside your browser and only reads the chat you pick. Nothing is uploaded to any server, and there’s no account and no AI reading your messages.
FAQ
Can I download a single Instagram chat?
No. Instagram exports all your messages together, with a folder per conversation. You can then open or analyze just the one you want.
Will the other person know if I download our messages?
No. Downloading your information is a copy of your own data and sends no notification.
Can I recover deleted messages with the download?
No. The export includes what’s still in your account; unsent or deleted messages don’t appear.
How long does Instagram take to prepare the download?
From minutes to several hours, depending on size. Choosing only Messages and low media quality speeds it up a lot.
Is JSON or HTML better?
HTML for reading in a browser; JSON for analyzing with a tool. Mutuo accepts both.
Got the .zip?
Load it, pick the conversation and see who puts more into your DMs. Free, no account, and it never leaves your phone.
